Five Journeys

Water Walkers: Five Journeys is the composite of five picture books about a schoolgirl named Mai. She and her family members are walking the perimeter of each of the Great Lakes. In each of the books, Mai learns valuable lessons about protecting the earth. The stories are based on what real-time Native people, under the leadership of Ojibway Grandmother Josephine Mandamin, accomplished. Their walks in the United States and Canada, of over 20,000 miles, were intended to bring "collective consciousness" regarding the condition of water, and to focus on environmental issues in treating water, with dignity and respect. The stories are contemporary and historical at the same time. They send a strong message about the protection of water through the eyes of a young girl.
