"In concert with an eponymous exhibition, the catalogue Doyle Lane: Master of Clay highlights the work of Los Angeles-based modern artist Doyle Lane, recognized for his masterful glazing techniques and evolving ceramics practice. Lane's command of this genre was singularly expressed through private and public tile mural commissions, abstract clay paintings, glazed and unglazed beads, pendant jewelry, decorative objects, and widely collected pottery vessels affectionately called "weed pots." The catalogue will explore Lane's notions of identity, fame, and politics in art while building upon the contributions of the enduring community of advocates who have championed his work through earlier exhibitions and publications. Born in New Orleans, Doyle Lane moved to Los Angeles in 1946; he studied at Los Angeles City College and East Los Angeles City College before attending the University of Southern California. Under the tutelage of major ceramist artists such as Glen Lukens, Vivika Heino, and F. Carlton Ball, Lane developed an impressive studio art practice. After refining his skills for eight years as a glaze technician at L. H. Butcher and Co., he assembled a robust community of patrons who enabled him to be supported full-time by his art. The publication expounds upon his life in New Orleans, including his early writings reflecting the racial discrimination he experienced as a youth, which informed his migration to Los Angeles; the various communities he cultivated across Los Angeles, from fellow ceramists in the studio craft movement to the Hispanic and African American communities in El Sereno, Leimert Park, and Pasadena; and his architectural commissions and relationships with prominent Los Angeles modern architects such as William L. Pereira, Welton Becket, A. Quincy Jones, and Edward Fickett"-- Provided by publisher.
