Description
A smart-aleck and a self-confessed slacker, Luke Collins is an eighth grader at Palm Ridge Middle School. However, when Luke reluctantly begins a research project, he finds himself engaged in a sequence of events that reverberate far beyond his school and his community. The BUBBLE SHEET BLUES is set at Palm Ridge Middle School in Florida in 2011 at the height of the No Child Left Behind movement. The novel is written in the form a mock I-Search paper authored by a reluctant 8th grade protagonist, Luke Collins, who starts a student protest against the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test, or FCAT, a punitive, high-stakes standardized test given annually in his middle school. However, the thematic scope of the book also includes banned books, school vouchers, teaching methodology, and the effects of divorce and abandonment on kids. The book also includes another first for the author-a light touch of middle school romance. However, the strongest element of all in the book is its humor. As a bonus, a school librarian, an English teacher, and a soccer coach also play important roles.
